The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE)

NVE – the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate reports to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. NVE has approximately 540 employees, 3/4 located in Oslo, 1/4 located at five different regional offices.

NVE’s main areas of responsibility:

  • Managing the nation’s energy and water resources
      – Includes a central role in mapping, monitoring and preventing floods, avalanches and landslides;
      – Energy mapping and licensing.
  • Promoting an efficient energy market
  • Ensuring cost efficient energy systems
  • Promoting efficient use of energy
  • Maintaining the national power supply
  • NVE is organised in four main units (departments): Energy and Regulation, Hydrology, Licensing and Landslides, Flood and River Management.
